Background:

Warrior Squad Foundation (WSF) is a non-profit making Non-Governmental Organization registered in Uganda (Reg. INDR93422994NB), with the overall goal of contributing to the social, economic, and political transformation of pastoral communities through working with them to find lifelong answers to the problems they face. WSF envisions a peaceful and just world free from poverty and seeks to empower the local marginalized and vulnerable persons to improve their well-being in a holistic, sustainable, peaceful, and equitable manner through an integrated community-based approach. KAREP Project

WSF with funding support from OXFAM Novib is implementing a 3-year “Karamoja Agro-Pastoral Resilience and Empowerment (KAREP)” project in Kotido District. The goal of the project is “to enhance the climate resilience, food and nutrition security, and economic empowerment of women and youth in Karamoja through climate-smart agriculture, sustainable market, and capacity building”. The project is supported by four Specific Objectives: 1) To increase food security for small holder farmers, especially women and youth; 2) To increase income security for small holder farmers; 3) To enhance the capacity of small holder farmers to adapt to climate change impact through adaptive technologies; 4) To increase participation of women in decision making processes through policy advocacy and influencing. The project is being implemented mainly in the two target sub-counties of Kachieri/Kapeta and Panyangara in Kotido District, in the Karamoja Sub-region of Uganda.

WSF is seeking a dedicated and motivated volunteer to join our team.

Project Volunteer – KAREP

Department: Programs
Reports to: Project Officer – KAREP (with overall oversight from the Food Security and Livelihoods (FSL) Lead)
Duration: Twelve (12) months, renewable within the project period (2025 to 2028) subject to performance and project needs.
Duty Station: Kotido Head Office, with regular field travel to Kachieri/Kapeta and Panyangara sub-counties
Nature of Engagement: Volunteer placement with a monthly volunteer allowance (facilitation) in line with the WSF Volunteer Policy. This is not a salaried staff position.

Purpose of the position:

The Project Volunteer – KAREP will support the Project Officer in the day-to-day implementation of KAREP activities, mainly community mobilisation, field activity facilitation, data collection and documentation, while gaining practical experience in livelihoods, climate-smart agriculture and community development programming.

Project Implementation Support:

  • Support the mobilisation of Agro-Pastoral Farmer Field School (APFFS) groups and beneficiaries for project activities, meetings and trainings.
  • Assist in the establishment and day-to-day follow-up of farmer-managed Climate-Smart Agriculture (CSA) demonstration block farms.
  • Support the dissemination of pre-season agro-weather advisories to farmer groups and community members.
  • Assist in organising and facilitating trainings on post-harvest handling to reduce food loss.
  • Support community assessment of degraded and fragile areas, and follow up on the community tree nurseries.
  • Support the formation and follow-up of Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLAs), including record keeping and use of VSLA kits and the SWAP approach.
  • Assist in mapping and assessing existing livestock infrastructure (dips) and follow up on rehabilitation works.
  • Support the mobilisation of women leaders within the APFFS groups for leadership training and participation in Local Government budgeting and planning processes.
  • Provide logistical support for field activities, including preparation of training materials, attendance registers and venue arrangements.

Data Collection and Documentation:

  • Support the verification of target beneficiaries against the agreed selection criteria.
  • Collect and record data on group attendance, participation rates and activity progress using WSF tools.
  • Assist in pre and post training assessments to measure changes in knowledge and practice among participants.
  • Take photographs, capture success stories and case studies (with informed consent) for project reporting and communication.
  • Maintain accurate and well organised field records and files for all project activities.

Networking and Stakeholder Engagement:

  • Support the Project Officer in organising coordination meetings with sub-county officials, extension workers, community leaders and other stakeholders.
  • Serve as a link between WSF and the farmer groups, relaying feedback, concerns and suggestions from communities to the project team.
  • Work closely with the Monitoring and Evaluation and Communications teams to support data flow and documentation.

Reporting:

  • Report directly to the Project Officer – KAREP for day-to-day guidance and supervision.
  • Prepare and submit brief field activity reports after each activity, and a monthly volunteer activity report.
  • Participate in weekly project team meetings and share updates on field activities.

Learning and Capacity Building:

  • Receive orientation on WSF policies, the KAREP project and field procedures at the start of the placement.
  • Participate in project trainings and workshops on livelihoods, climate-smart agriculture, VSLA methodology, gender and conflict sensitivity.
  • Benefit from on-the-job mentoring and coaching by the Project Officer and the Programs team.
  • Receive a certificate of volunteer service and a recommendation letter upon satisfactory completion of the placement.

Conduct and Safeguarding:

  • Adhere to the WSF Code of Conduct, Safeguarding and Protection from Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (PSEA) policies at all times.
  • Respect community values and culture, and maintain confidentiality of beneficiary information.
  • Properly care for and account for any project materials, equipment or funds entrusted to the volunteer.

Success Factors:

  • Self-motivated, willing to learn, and able to take initiative under supervision.
  • Good community mobilisation and interpersonal skills; able to relate well with farmers, women and youth.
  • Willingness to work in rural and hard-to-reach areas, often for long hours in the field.
  • Team player with integrity, reliability and good time management.

Knowledge and Experience:

  • Certificate or Diploma in Agriculture, Agribusiness, Social Sciences, Development Studies, Environmental Science or a related field.
  • Recent graduates are encouraged to apply; previous volunteering or internship experience with an NGO or community-based project is an added advantage.
  • Basic knowledge of agriculture, livelihoods, VSLA or community development work.
  • Basic computer skills (MS Word, Excel) and ability to use mobile data collection tools.
  • Good oral and written communication and basic report writing skills.
  • Fluency in English; fluency in Ngakarimojong is required, and residence in or familiarity with Kotido District is an added advantage.
