Background:
The African Field Epidemiology Network (AFENET) is a not-for-profit networking alliance and service organization that brings together Field Epidemiology Training Programs (FETPs) across Africa, working side by side with Ministries of Health, regional and international partners. AFENET works to strengthen the epidemiology and disease surveillance capabilities of African countries, which are critical to meeting the requirements of the Integrated Disease Surveillance and Response (IDSR) strategy and the International Health Regulations (IHR).
The Journal of Interventional Epidemiology and Public Health (JIEPH) is a peer-reviewed, open-access journal owned and published by the African Field Epidemiology Network (AFENET). JIEPH publishes original research, field investigations, and evidence syntheses that advance interventional and applied epidemiology and public health practice across Africa and beyond. The journal is indexed in Scopus, DOAJ, AJOL, CABI Global Health/CAB Abstracts and EBSCO, with active applications pending in additional major databases, and continues to expand its reach, authorship base, and editorial capacity to sustain quality and timeliness of publication.
JIEPH is seeking to recruit a qualified, experienced, and committed Editor to strengthen its editorial team.
Job Title: Editor

Job Purpose:
The Editor will be responsible for the day-to-day scientific and editorial handling of manuscripts assigned within their area of expertise, working through the journal’s Editorial Manager platform, in collaboration with the Managing Editor, Editorial Board, and peer reviewers. The role offers valuable editorial leadership experience, international visibility, and the opportunity to shape scientific publishing in field epidemiology and public health in Africa.
Key Responsibilities
• Conduct initial and scientific assessment of assigned manuscripts for scope, originality, and methodological soundness.
• Identify, invite, and manage at least two independent peer reviewers per manuscript in line with JIEPH’s double-blind peer review policy.
• Monitor review progress in Editorial Manager, follow up on overdue reviews, and escalate nonresponsive reviewers.
• Synthesize reviewer recommendations and render timely, well-reasoned editorial decisions (accept, reject, minor/major revision).
• Communicate professionally and constructively with authors and reviewers throughout the review and revision process.
• Ensure adherence to COPE and ICMJE standards, including checks for authorship, conflicts of interest, ethical approvals, and reporting guidelines (e.g., STROBE, CONSORT, PRISMA).
• Contribute to editorial board discussions, journal policy development, and occasional guest editorial or thematic supplement work.
• Support efforts to expand the journal’s reviewer pool and promote JIEPH within relevant professional networks.
• Conduct copyediting and PDF generation using LaTeX or any other program as may be approved by the journal from time to time, and prepare manuscript gallery proofs
• Support scientific communication within AFENET member programs and the wider network, strengthening the visibility, quality, and dissemination of scientific outputs generated across the network.
Required Academic Qualifications
• Master’s degree qualification in Epidemiology, Public health, or a related field; FETP Advanced graduates with strong publication records are encouraged to apply. A terminal degree qualification in epidemiology, public health, or a related field is an added advantage.
Required experience
• A minimum of 10 peer-reviewed publications, with demonstrated alignment to JIEPH’s scope (e.g., outbreak investigation, surveillance, AMR/One Health, MNCAH, health systems, implementation science).
• Prior experience as a peer reviewer; prior editorial experience (Associate Editor, Section Editor, or equivalent) is an advantage.
• Active institutional affiliation and an active ORCID record.
• Working knowledge of COPE, ICMJE, and standard reporting guidelines for health research.
Required Skills and abilities
• Excellent scientific writing, critical appraisal, and communication skills in English; proficiency in French and/or Portuguese is an added advantage.
• Capacity to commit approximately 30-40 hours per week to manuscript handling and editorial duties.
• No unresolved conflicts of interest with JIEPH or AFENET, and a demonstrated commitment to research integrity and open science.
• Working knowledge of LaTeX, and the ability to work effectively in multicultural teams and under pressure to achieve team results, are added advantages.
Remuneration and Benefits:
Remuneration for this position is competitive and will be determined based on the candidate’s prior editorial experience, scientific publication record, and demonstrated expertise.
