We currently have an exciting career opportunity for the role of Finance Manager, Jubilee Life Insurance, Uganda. The position holder will report to the Chief Finance Officer.

Role Purpose

The Finance Manager is responsible for playing a pivotal role in managing the financial reporting function and overseeing the accounts payable process within Jubilee Life Insurance Company Limited. The primary purpose of this role is to ensure accurate and timely financial reporting, compliance with accounting standards, and efficient processing of vendor payments. The role holder will collaborate closely with the Finance team to support financial operations and maintain financial integrity.

Main Responsibilities

Strategy

  1. Effective Accounts Payable Management. Optimize the accounts payable process by streamlining workflows and implementing efficient payment procedures. Ensure timely payments to vendors, enhancing vendor relationships and mitigating the risk of late payment penalties or supply chain disruptions.
  2. Financial Analysis and Insights. Provide valuable financial analysis, variances, and insights to senior management and stakeholders. Support decision-makers with actionable information, aiding in budgeting, forecasting, and strategic planning processes.
  3. Proactive Financial Risk Management. Identify, assess, and mitigate financial risks to safeguard the company’s financial stability. Develop and implement risk management strategies to protect the company from various financial exposures, ensuring resilience against economic uncertainties.
  4. Process Improvements. Continuously assess and improve financial reporting and accounts payable processes to enhance efficiency and accuracy. Optimize resource utilization, reduce processing time, and enhance overall financial operations.

Operational

  1. Prepare and oversee the preparation of accurate and timely financial statements, including income statements, balance sheets, and cash flow statements.
  2. Ensure compliance with accounting principles and regulatory requirements in financial reporting.
  3. Collaborate with internal and external auditors to facilitate audits and provide necessary financial information.
  4. Oversee general ledger maintenance and reconciliations to ensure accurate financial data and reporting.
  5. Monitor account balances and resolve discrepancies as necessary.
  6. Manage the accounts payable process, including invoice processing, payment processing, and vendor management.
  7. Ensure timely and accurate payments to vendors while adhering to company policies and payment terms.
  8. Review and approve high-value payments and monitor payment runs.
  9. Conduct financial analysis to provide insights into financial performance and variances for management review.
  10. Prepare financial reports and presentations for senior management and stakeholders.
  11. Ensure compliance with internal control procedures related to financial reporting and accounts payable.
  12. Implement process improvements to enhance efficiency and strengthen internal controls.
  13. Collaborate with the Finance team in the budgeting and forecasting process to provide accurate financial data and analysis.

Corporate Governance

  1. Compliance. Stay updated on emerging trends, best practices, and industry benchmarks related to IFRS17 implementation and compliance.
  2. Adherence to the laws and regulations of Uganda, the policies and regulations within the insurance industry and all internal company policies and procedures.
  3. Ensuring compliance with applicable statutory and regulatory requirements and establishing mitigation measures against emerging business risks.

People and Culture

  1. Team Leadership: Build and lead cross-functional project teams, fostering collaboration, accountability, and high performance across diverse skill sets and departments.
  2. Retention KPI: Achieve a regrettable turnover rate below 5% annually within project teams by promoting a supportive environment, career growth opportunities, and recognition.
  3. Employee Engagement Score (EES) KPI: Drive a 10% year-over-year increase in EES through team-building, transparent communication, and empowerment initiatives.
  4. Cultural Alignment Index (CAI): Attain the Company’s CAI target score by embedding Jubilee’s values (e.g., innovation, teamwork, excellence) into project execution and team dynamics.
  5. Skill Development: Provide mentorship and training to team members on your departmental tools, techniques, and industry-specific knowledge, enhancing capability.
  6. Conflict Resolution: Mediate and resolve team conflicts or stakeholder disputes, maintaining morale and focus on project goals.
  7. Resource Advocacy: Advocate for team needs (e.g., additional resources, training) to senior management, ensuring departmental success and staff well-being.

Leadership

  1. Lead, coach, mentor, and develop the Finance team to deliver high-quality assurance services.
  2. Allocate assignments and monitor performance to ensure delivery against approved finance plans, timelines, and quality standards.
  3. Build technical capability within the finance team through coaching, professional development, and succession planning.
  4. Drive a high-performance culture focused on continuous improvement, accountability, collaboration, and innovation.
  5. Manage departmental resources and budgets to ensure efficient and effective delivery of the Internal
  6. Promote the adoption of data analytics, finance systems, and leading practices to enhance departmental effectiveness.

Stakeholder Engagement

  1. Engage regularly with senior management and the Board Finance Committee. 
  2. Present findings, risk assessments, and key insights to governance forums. 
  3. Maintain strong working relationships with internal stakeholders to support effective issue resolution and risk mitigation. 
  4. Coordinate effectively with external stakeholders, regulators, and consultants where required.

Key Deliverables for the position

  1. Timely and Accurate Financial Reporting. Oversee the preparation and submission of timely and accurate financial statements, including income statements, balance sheets, and cash flow statements, in compliance with accounting standards and regulatory requirements.
  2. Efficient Accounts Payable Process. Ensure the efficient processing of vendor invoices, timely approval, and accurate payment processing to maintain positive vendor relationships and support the company’s financial operations.
  3. Compliance and Internal Controls. Implement and maintain strong internal controls to ensure compliance with accounting standards, company policies, and relevant regulations in both financial reporting and accounts payable processes.
  4. Financial Analysis and Insights. Provide financial analysis, variances, and insights to senior management to support decision-making, budgeting, and forecasting processes.
  5. Team Management and Development. Oversee and guide the financial reporting and payables team, providing leadership, mentoring, and professional development opportunities.
  6. Audit Support. Collaborate with internal and external auditors to facilitate smooth audits and provide necessary financial information during audit processes.

 

The main KPIs for this role are; 100% implementation of the approved annual audit plan, 75% closure rate of audit actions and Customer Satisfaction – Improved NPS from baseline

Academic Qualifications

  1. Bachelor’s degree in finance, Accounting, Business or any other related course 
  2. Master’s degree in finance, Accounting or a Business-related course will be an added advantage.
  3. Professional accounting qualification (e.g., CPA, ACCA).

Relevant Experience

  1. Minimum of 4-6 years of experience in finance and accounting roles, including experience in financial reporting and compliance.
  2. Significant experience in the insurance industry and knowledge of insurance accounting standards.
  3. Experience in leading and managing cross-functional projects or initiatives.
  4. Proven experience in a leadership or managerial role (minimum of 2 years).
