Job Overview
The Dove’s Nest Hotel in Gulu, Uganda, is seeking a dynamic and results-driven Hotel Manager to oversee its operations across two distinct sites. These include The Dove’s Nest Hotel and Luo Heritage Cottages, collectively offering 33 rooms. The successful candidate will be responsible for unifying these properties under a single, profitable brand while leading a team of approximately 35 staff members. This role is ideal for a hands-on commercial leader who thrives in a mid-level management environment and is eager to make a significant impact in the Ugandan hospitality sector. The position reports directly to the Owners and the Board, offering a direct line to strategic decision-making.
Key Responsibilities
- Own and execute the annual budget, ensuring all financial targets are met with precision and accountability.
- Develop and manage the monthly management pack, providing clear insights into operational performance and areas for improvement.
- Set and drive Year 1 targets for occupancy rates, room pricing, cash margins, and guest satisfaction scores to ensure profitability.
- Lead, mentor, and coach a diverse team of about 35 employees, fostering a culture of excellence and collaboration across both sites.
- Oversee daily operations at both locations, ensuring consistent service delivery and adherence to brand standards.
- Implement marketing and sales strategies to increase visibility and attract a steady stream of local and international guests.
- Manage vendor relationships and negotiate contracts to secure the best value for goods and services without compromising quality.
- Handle guest complaints and inquiries with professionalism, ensuring every guest has a memorable and positive stay.
Qualifications & Experience
Essential
- A Bachelor’s degree in Hospitality Management, Business Administration, or a related field from a recognized institution.
- A minimum of 7 years of progressive experience in hotel management, with a proven track record of leading teams and improving profitability.
- Strong leadership and people management skills, capable of motivating and developing a team of 35 staff members.
- Excellent financial acumen, including budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting experience in a hospitality setting.
- Fluency in English, both written and spoken, to communicate effectively with guests, staff, and stakeholders.
Desirable
- Previous experience managing multiple hotel properties or operating two distinct sites simultaneously.
- Familiarity with the Ugandan hospitality market, particularly in Northern Uganda or Gulu region.
- Certification in hospitality management or leadership from a reputable organization such as IHG or Marriott.
- Knowledge of local tourism trends and cultural heritage, especially regarding Luo Heritage Cottages.
- Proficiency in using hotel management software such as Opera PMS, Micros, or similar systems.
