Position Overview
Masaka Creamery is seeking a diligent and persuasive Maintenance Engineer to ensure the smooth, safe running and maintenance of the company’s facilities and equipment. This role is essential in supporting the company’s goals and strategies through preventive maintenance, equipment management, Safety Compliance, Troubleshooting and Repairs, Inventory Management and regulatory compliance.
Key Responsibilities
1. Preventive Maintenance
Maintenance programs: Develop, implement and schedule programs to prevent equipment breakdowns and ensure consistent production quality.
Scheduled Inspections:
Daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, annual inspections for each asset. Check for wear, leaks, strange noises, vibrations, proper operation, and cleanliness.
Predictive maintenance: Collect and use data analysis and monitoring to predict and prevent unexpected equipment failures.
Calibration Program: Regular calibration of all critical instruments (temperature sensors. weighing scales, pH meters, pressure gauges).
Component Replacement: Scheduled replacement of wear parts (belts, bearings, seals) before they fail.
2. Reactive Maintenance / Breakdown Management
Prioritization System: Have a clear system for categorizing and prioritizing urgent repairs based on food safety impact and production disruption.
Rapid Response Procedures: Plan for immediate response to breakdowns, including communication channels and escalation matrix.
Contamination Control during: Adhere to Strict procedures to prevent contamination during emergency repairs (isolating the area, covering food contact surfaces. using dedicated tools, thorough post-repair cleaning and sanitation).
Temporary Repair Policy: A clear policy for temporary repairs, detailing when they are permissible, the materials to be used (must be food-safe), and the timeline for permanent repair.
Clear communication: Communicate clearly with production staff, management, and other stakeholders.
3. Equipment Management
Equipment history: Maintain accurate records of equipment maintenance and repair history.
Equipment Register/Inventory: Maintain A comprehensive list of all critical equipment and assets, including: Asset ID/Tag Number, Make, Model, Serial Number, Location (Area, Production Line), Installation Date, Criticality, Food contact vs. non-food contact surfaces, Manufacturer’s maintenance recommendations.. Training and development: Provide training and development opportunities for maintenance personnel to ensure they are updated with new installations, developed technologies and strategic changes. Autonomous Maintenance and Troubleshooting: Regular equipping and training of production operators on the daily care of the equipment.
Optimizing Equipment Performance: Ensuring machinery operates at peak efficiency to maintain product quality, consistency, and yield.
4. Spare Parts Management
Inventory Control: Track critical spare parts, minimum/maximum stock levels, reorder points.
Food-Grade Certification: Ensure all lubricants, seals, gaskets, and replacement parts used on or near food contact surfaces are certified food-grade. Maintain documentation for this.
Secure Storage: Store spare parts in a clean, dry, and secure environment to prevent loss, wastage and contamination, especially food-grade items.
Vendor management: Develop relationships with reliable vendors to ensure timely delivery of parts and services.
5. Team Management
Leadership and Mentorship: Define roles, responsibilities, and performance standards for the technical team, ensuring everyone understands what is expected of them.
On-the-job training: Mentoring, shadowing experienced technicians, and cross-training. Motivating and Inspiring: Motivates the technical team, recognizes achievements, and builds a positive work environment that encourages collaboration and problem-solving.
6. Regulatory Compliance
Ensuring maintenance activities adhere to food safety regulations, hygiene standards, and OSHA requirements to prevent contamination and accidents.
Ensure compliance to REMA on waste water treatment, Rwanda FDA on premises and RSB on calibration.
Work Expectations & Communication
Communicate with contractors, technicians and other Masaka staff assertively and effectively
Report directly to the Operations Manager.
Performance Incentives: As per the company policy.
Work Hours: Full-time position based in Kigali.
Responsiveness: Must be responsive to time-sensitive machine breakdown issues.
Communication: Strong verbal and written communication skills are essential.
Preferred Qualifications
- Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in Plant Maintenance, Production Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering.
- 4+ years of experience in the dairy industry or food manufacturing company.
- Proven ability to maintain and manage line/batch pasteurizers, Refrigeration Systems and bottle blowing units.
- Experience in waste water management, RO water system and water bottling units.
- Strong negotiation and problem-solving skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Inventory management system, and recordkeeping systems.
- Fluency in English, either Kiswahili or Kinyarwanda (French a plus).
- High emotional intelligence and team player.

Paid Leave: Based on working schedule
Travel: Candidate will work primarily from the company’s offices at Plot G5, Kigali Special Economic Zone, Kigali, Rwanda
Duration: Seeking a minimum initial commit of 24 months
Reporting: Candidates will report to the Operations Manager as well as work collaboratively with other department heads and team members.
Expenses: Candidate shall be reimbursed for business related airtime, transportation and other authorized business expenses.
