The position

AKES, U is a private, not-for-profit organization committed to enriching the lives of “many generations of multi-racial and multi-cultural student populations” through the provision of quality and affordable education. AKES, U operates schools from Pre-School to High School and offers the Cambridge Curriculum, International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE), International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) and the Uganda National Primary and Secondary Curriculum.

Since November 2025, the Aga Khan School Kampala has responded to the arrival of refugees by enrolling 111 students from Nursery to Higher Secondary. A significant challenge for these students is the lack of English language proficiency. To address this, AKES has initiated intensive English support, including delivery of parallel education offering for students requiring additional language support.

A second phase of the programme includes the planned enrollment of students of 14-18 years olds. Their educational pathway is designed as follows:

  • Ages 14-17: Enrollment in a 10-12month pre-IGCSE intensive English programme, with progression to the full IGCSE programme upon reaching the required proficiency level.
  • Age 18: Enrollment in a foundational English and Maths programme, followed by transition into the Pearson BTEC vocational pathway.

To ensure the academic success, legal compliance, holistic integration, and sustained progress of these students, a dedicated Programme Coordinator.
The Programme Coordinator  will be responsible for the overall management, coordination, monitoring, and reporting of the Student Support Programme from primary to secondary level. This includes ensuring effective academic interventions in collaboration and coordination with the school management and teachers, stakeholder management, legal compliance and student integration. However the key responsibilities and deliverables for the role are;

Programme Management & Administrative Coordination

  • Serve as the central point of contact and coordination between the school, the Aga Khan Education Board (AKEB) Uganda, and other relevant stakeholders.
  • Ensure that all enrolled children possess and maintain the required documentation as per Ugandan law (e.g., refugee status documentation).
  • Develop and maintain detailed implementation plans and timelines for all programme components.
  • Coordinate the logistical and administrative aspects of programme operations.
  • Liaise with Pearson representatives to ensure the smooth setup the BTEC programme.
  • Collaborate with AKES EdTech specialists to integrate technology that supplements skill development

Student Integration, Welfare & Parental Engagement

  • Behaviour Management & School Policy: Coordinate with parents and parent committees to ensure children understand and adhere to school policies and behaviour expectations.
  • Extracurricular Integration: Work with Head teachers and relevant subject teacher to ensure children are encouraged and supported to participate in mainstream extracurricular activities.
  • Socioemotional Support: Monitor student well-being in collaboration with school counsellors.

Monitoring Students’ Academic Progress

  • Work with teachers and school leadership to develop a monitoring system for the systematic collection of student learning data.
  • Regularly review student assessment data.
  • Compile and analyze biweekly progress reports from subject teachers.
  • Arrange targeted, needs-based academic interventions in collaboration with teachers and TKN specialists.

Reporting

  • Prepare and submit comprehensive biweekly and monthly reports to the CEO and relevant stakeholders detailing student progress, integration efforts, parental engagement, documentation status, EdTech initiatives.
  • Maintain clear and consistent communication with all stakeholders.

The requirements

Qualifications & Experience:

  • A minimum of a bachelor’s degree in education, social science, management or related field.
  • At least 3 years experience in programme coordination, preferably in education or social secto
  •  Experience working with refugee and/or other displaced communities.
  • Proven track record in stakeholder management, including liaising with parents, school leadership, and external stakeholders.
  • Experience in coordinating academic interventions

Skills and competences

    • Excellent organizational, planning, and project management skills.
    • Strong data analysis skills with the ability to compile metrics and produce high-quality, comprehensive reports
    • Outstanding interpersonal and cross-cultural communication skills to effectively engage with  parents, school teachers, counselors, and headteachers and other key stakeholders
    • Ability to analyse data and produce high-quality written reports.
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
    • Fluency in English (written and spoken). Knowledge of Dari  is an added advantage.
