Project Administrator – GULU UNIVERSITY

Project Administrator – GULU UNIVERSITY

Pastoral Resilience and Sense of place in Karamoja (PReSence) Project
Call for Applications for the Project Administrator

Background
Gulu University Constituent College Moroto-Uganda and University College Copenhagen, partnering with Karamoja Herders of the Horn (KHH) and University of Copenhagen, are implementing a five-year project titled “Pastoral Resilience and Sense of place in Karamoja, Uganda – PReSense.” The program is funded by the DANIDA Fellowship Centre (DFC).

The project investigates the main research question: How does sense of place among pastoralists in Karamoja, Uganda, affect climate change adaptation practices, and how can this knowledge contribute to reducing mal-adaptive practices and enhancing resilience?

The project advances current knowledge on climate change adaptation in pastoral communities using sense of place as a lens, which serves two main purposes: to apply a holistic approach to understanding climate resilience amongst pastoralists beyond instrumentalist explanation models and/or calculated risk reduction strategies; and to provide a knowledge base for decolonizing the narratives and understandings of pastoralism, which are continuously used in arguments for policies and interventions that fit poorly with the realities on the ground. Moreover, applying sense of place to a mobile, non-sedentary way of life will advance conceptual re-thinking of climate change adaptation research. Karamoja region in Uganda hosting predominantly pastoralist communities serves as a good case for this study as both region and nation at large are heavily affected by climate change effect.

To effectively achieve this, the Project is soliciting applications from suitably qualified candidates for:
