KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Conduct routine safety inspections to identify hazards and unsafe conditions.
• Monitor compliance with HSE policies, risk assessments and safe work practices.
• Support supervisors in applying safety controls and corrective actions.
• Deliver worker inductions, toolbox talks and safety awareness sessions.
• Check the availability, correct use and condition of PPE.
• Take part in risk assessments and Job Safety Analyses (JSAs).
• Monitor safety controls across high-risk activities: mining, crushing, processing, workshops, excavation, lifting, hot work and traffic.
• Investigate accidents, incidents and near misses, and recommend corrective and preventive actions.
• Maintain safety records, inspection and incident reports, training records and corrective-action registers.
• Monitor emergency preparedness, including first aid, fire safety, emergency access and assembly points.
• Oversee traffic and haul-road safety, covering vehicle movement, speed control and pedestrian safety.
• Follow up outstanding actions and verify corrective measures are implemented.
• Report significant risks and recurring non-conformities to management.
• Promote a positive safety culture where workers feel encouraged to report hazards.
• Collaborate with the Environmental Officer and other departments on overlapping safety and environmental risks.

QUALIFICATIONS :

• Diploma or degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Health, Industrial Safety or a related field.
• 2-3 years’ safety experience, preferably in mining, construction, manufacturing or similar high-risk industry.
• Working knowledge of risk assessment, incident investigation, PPE, emergency preparedness and inspections.
• Knowledge of Uganda’s OHS requirements.
• Professional OHS certification is an added advantage.
• Strong report-writing, communication and record-keeping skills.
• Able to work independently in a busy field environment and engage with all levels of staff.
