Background:
The African Field Epidemiology Network (AFENET) is a not-for-profit networking alliance and service organization that brings together Field Epidemiology Training Programs (FETPs) across Africa, working side by side with Ministries of Health, regional and international partners. AFENET works to strengthen the epidemiology and disease surveillance capabilities of African countries, which are critical to meeting the requirements of the Integrated Disease Surveillance and Response (IDSR) strategy and the International Health Regulations (IHR).
AFENET in partnership with the School of Public Health of Makerere University (MUSPH) is seeking to recruit a highly qualified and experienced Ugandan to serve in the position below:
Job Title: Scientific Writer
Location/Workstation: School of Public Health-Makerere University
Reports to: Program Director Uganda Field Epidemiology Program at the School of Public Health-Makerere University
No. of Vacancies: One (1) Position
Key Responsibilities
a) Co-coordinate MPH program and coordinate field activities under the program
b) Oversee writing manuscripts for the Uganda field epidemiology Program at the School of Public Health Makerere University (MPH/Advanced FETP) residents and MoH
c) Support statistical a n a l ys is of work done by tra inee s, Program Staff and MoHEpidemiology Staff
d) Work closely with the program staff to develop manuscripts for various projects and will ensure timely submission of papers for publication
e) Take the lead in following-up with the authors and the journal until the paper is accepted for publicationf) Develop and maintain a log database of all products from the Uganda field epidemiology Program at the School of Public Health Makerere University (MPH/Advanced FETP) residents.
g) Work together with the Program Staff to organize and conduct Scientific Writing Workshops for Trainees, Pl–lFP Staff and Mol-1- Epidemiology Staff
g) Review all the Program abstracts and manuscripts and presentations to ensure scientific integrity of these products prior to approval before submission to conferences and journals
h) Work together with the Uganda field epidemiology Program at the School of Public Health Makerere University (MPH/Advanced FETP) residents and MoH Epidemiology Staff to write Concepts.
i) Lead resource mobilization efforts for the FETP program at MakSPH by writing expressions of Interest, and/or proposals for any new initiatives that may arise during the contract period
j) Support documentation of key projects, Success stories and findings to be included in the Uganda field epidemiology Program at the School of Public Health Makerere University (MPH/Advanced FETP) and maintain Program archives.
k) Promote social media visibility of key projects, Success stories, activities and products at the Uganda field epidemiology Program at the School of Public Health Makerere University (MPH/Advanced FETP)
l) Support preparations for AFENET bi-annual conference, AFTERS and disseminations.
h) Any other duties that may be assigned to you from time to time by your supervisor.
Required Academic Qualifications and experience
• Bachelor’s degree in Medicine (MD, MBCHB, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Laboratory, Nursing) and;
• Master’s degree in public health with FETP training and experience (at least three (3) years since
graduation).
• At least 5 publications with two (2) as first author.
• Demonstrated experience in teaching and supervising students at Master’s level.
Required Skills and abilities
• Excellent scientific writing, critical appraisal, and communication skills in English.
• Capacity to commit time to Scientific research writing and reviews of Student manuscripts is desired
attribute.
• Demonstrated commitment to research integrity and open science.
• Interested candidates must be strictly not above forty (40) years of age.
