Senior Obstetrician & Gynecologist (OB/GYN Specialist) – Norvik Hospital

About the Opportunity

Norvik Hospital is seeking a Senior OB/GYN Specialist to lead and deliver comprehensive obstetric and gynecological care as part of one of the hospital’s anchor clinical departments. The successful candidate will provide expert clinical management across antenatal, intrapartum, postnatal, and gynecological services, while contributing to the development of protocols, mentoring junior staff, and supporting the hospital’s broader maternal and reproductive health strategy.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive outpatient and inpatient obstetric and gynecological care, including antenatal, intrapartum, and postnatal management.
  • Perform normal and complicated deliveries, Caesarean sections, and other obstetric surgical procedures.
  • Conduct gynecological surgeries, including laparoscopic and open procedures (e.g., hysterectomy, myomectomy, ovarian cystectomy).
  • Manage high-risk pregnancies and obstetric emergencies, coordinating with anesthesia, NICU, and critical care teams as needed.
  • Provide family planning, infertility evaluation, and reproductive health counselling services.
  • Lead and supervise the Maternity and Labour & Delivery units, ensuring adherence to clinical protocols and patient safety standards.
  • Mentor and provide clinical guidance to junior doctors, medical officers, midwives, and nursing staff.
  • Participate in the development and continuous improvement of departmental protocols, standard operating procedures, and quality assurance initiatives.
  • Maintain accurate, timely clinical documentation in line with hospital and regulatory requirements.
  • Participate in the on-call roster for obstetric and gynecological emergencies.
  • Support the hospital’s business development efforts, including community outreach, referral network building, and departmental growth initiatives.
  • Ensure compliance with infection prevention, patient safety, and Ministry of Health regulatory standards.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams across departments (Paediatrics/NICU, Anesthesia, Radiology, Laboratory) for integrated patient care.

Qualifications

  • MBChB or equivalent medical degree from a recognized institution.
  • Postgraduate specialization (MD/MS/DGO/DNB or equivalent) in Obstetrics & Gynecology.
  • Fellowship or additional subspecialty training (e.g., maternal-fetal medicine, reproductive endocrinology, gynae-oncology, laparoscopic surgery) is an added advantage

Experience

  • Minimum 5–7 years of post-qualification clinical experience in Obstetrics & Gynecology, including significant experience in a senior or consultant capacity.
  • Demonstrated experience independently managing high-risk obstetric cases and complex gynecological surgeries.
  • Prior experience in a multispecialty hospital or tertiary care setting preferred.
  • Experience mentoring junior clinical staff and contributing to departmental leadership is highly desirable.
    Licensure & Registration
  • Valid registration/license with the relevant national Medical & Dental Practitioners Council (or eligibility for registration in Uganda with the Uganda Medical and Dental Practitioners Council).
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) / Advanced Life Support certification; Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics (ALSO) preferred.
  • Clean professional record with no unresolved disciplinary or malpractice concerns.

  • Commitment to patient-centered care, ethics, and continuous professional development.
  • Proficiency with electronic medical records / hospital information management systems.
  • Cultural sensitivity and adaptability to a diverse, multinational patient population.
