Job Purpose

The Digital Communications Officer plans, produces and publishes high-quality digital communications that strengthen Nyaka’s visibility, engagement, fundraising and advocacy. Working closely with programme teams and the Communications Manager, the Officer turns accurate programme evidence and community stories into safe, compelling content for Nyaka’s website, social media, email and digital campaigns.

Key Responsibilities

1. Digital Content and Storytelling

  • Develop and maintain a rolling digital content calendar aligned to Nyaka’s priorities, campaigns, events and programme calendar.
  • Capture, edit and package photographs, short-form video, reels, graphics, interviews and written stories for different digital channels.
  • Draft, edit and proofread website stories, social-media copy, newsletters and other digital content in Nyaka’s voice and brand style.
  • Work with programme teams to verify facts, capture outcomes and identify compelling stories of change.
  • Maintain a well-organised, searchable digital asset library, including approved captions, images, video and consent records.

2. Channel Management and Community Engagement

  • Publish and schedule content across Nyaka’s approved digital platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, X, TikTok, YouTube and the website.
  • Monitor comments, direct messages and online conversations; respond promptly within agreed guidance and escalate sensitive, safeguarding, media or reputational issues.
  • Support the management of website content, ensuring news, programme updates, campaign pages and key calls to action remain current and accurate.
  • Track relevant trends, audience conversations and digital opportunities, and recommend content ideas that fit Nyaka’s mission and audiences.

3. Campaigns, Fundraising and Events

  • Deliver digital communications for fundraising, advocacy and programme campaigns, including supporter journeys, campaign assets, email and website updates.
  • Create and coordinate content that promotes Nyaka events before, during and after delivery, including appropriate live coverage.
  • Support paid digital promotion when approved, ensuring correct targeting, budgets, creative assets and reporting.
  • Work with the Communications Manager and relevant teams to ensure partner recognition and fundraising communications are accurate, timely and compliant with agreed commitments.

4. Analytics and Continuous Improvement

  • Monitor performance across social media, email, website and digital campaigns using agreed tools and dashboards.
  • Prepare concise monthly reports on reach, engagement, audience growth, website activity, campaign performance and recommendations.
  • Use insights to test and improve content formats, posting times, calls to action and audience targeting.
  • Keep abreast of relevant digital communication tools, platform changes and nonprofit communication practice.

5. Coordination, Safeguarding and Compliance

  • Coordinate content requests and deadlines with programme, fundraising and leadership colleagues, and provide practical guidance to communications volunteers where assigned.
  • Apply Nyaka’s brand, safeguarding, data-protection, consent and confidentiality requirements to every piece of content.
  • Ensure children and adults at risk are represented with dignity and that no identifiable content is used without appropriate consent and approval.
  • Undertake other communications duties reasonably assigned by the Communications Manager.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, Marketing, Media, Digital Media, or a related field.
  • At least two years of relevant experience in digital communications, content production, social-media management, or a similar role.
  • Experience in a nonprofit or development setting is an advantage.
  • Demonstrated experience creating strong written, visual and short-form video content for multiple digital platforms.
  • Experience using content-management, social-media scheduling, email-marketing and analytics tools.

Competencies and Technical Skills

  • Excellent writing, editing, proofreading and storytelling skills, with the ability to adapt content for different audiences and platforms.
  • Practical graphic-design and video-editing skills; proficiency with tools such as Canva, Adobe Creative Cloud or equivalent is an advantage.
  • Strong understanding of platform-specific formats, digital engagement and basic digital fundraising principles.
  • Ability to interpret analytics and turn data into practical recommendations.
  • Strong planning, organisation and project-management skills, with the ability to manage several deadlines.
  • Sound judgement, discretion, cultural sensitivity and commitment to ethical, inclusive and safeguarding-centred communication.
  • Ability to work collaboratively, take initiative and travel to programme locations when required.
